Some of you may have noticed the new badge on my site for The Canadian Living Blogger Network. This is something I’m very excited about. I was chosen to be part of this new blogger network. Today I am doing my first post for them by recreating in my kitchen Canadian Living’s recipe for Beef and Broccoli Brown Rice Bowl. I was a little nervous before attempting this recipe as I have never cooked steak before. Usually when I make a recipe that calls for steak I substitute pasanday which I believe are veal cutlets.
So to get started on this recipe I had to hunt down some Halal Beef Flank Steak. My regular butcher only carries flank steak in the summer. He advised I try the Middle Eastern meat markets as they usually carry it year round. I tracked down a butcher who carries Beef Flank Steak and now I was ready for my first try at cooking steak!
This recipe is labelled as being “Quick and Easy” and I have to agree. This was very easy to put together. This recipe has a lot of vegetables which is a big plus for us! The addition of brown rice was a great change from our usual Basmati Rice. This meal took 20 minutes to cook plus prep time. It is a great dish to make on a busy weeknight. I used vegetable stock instead of the sodium-reduced beef broth listed in the recipe since you cannot get ready made Halal beef broth. The vegetable stock I used had no salt added so I increased the amount of salt in the recipe to compensate.
Overall I thought this was a great weeknight meal. It came together very quickly. The flavour was mild for our taste buds so next time I will increase the amount of garlic and ginger and sprinkle some red chilli flakes on top.
For the recipe please head over to Canadian Living!
luks delicious, though even i have never made or tasted steaks… is it the same as pasandey..?
Congrats Asiya…this is so awesome!!! Hey fix the link for the recipe ASAP…it's a broken link 🙁
Thanks Reshma! I checked the links..they work for me. Could it be a problem with using it with a phone?

Steak is totally different from pasanday. There are many different cuts of steak. If you ask your butcher he should be able to explain the difference. I always have pasandey in the fridge and my husband isn't a fan of steaks so that's why I usually would use that in recipes instead of steak.
Thanks you so much Fatema! I'm really excited to be working with Canadian Living!
I'm so glad you like my blog…it's just a hobby to keep myself busy so when I hear someone is actually reading it regularly it totally makes my day! 🙂

Congrats again! I'm so happy and proud of you! 🙂
This looks delicious! I love rice bowls 🙂
Sooo I made this for dinner last night and I loved it! I couldn't find halal flank stank, but our local butcher sells these really thinly sliced cuts of meat. He said that they use it for shawarma, so I figured that it could be good for a stir-fry as well. I also used a bag stir-fry vegetables (it had broccoli, carrots, and snow peas in it) instead of the broccoli and carrots separately because it was just easier for me that way lol 🙂 Oh, and I also just mixed the rice into the meat because that was easier for me. It was soooo delicious! And I topped my bowl off with a squirt of Sriracha 😀 Delish!
Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it! For us desis it needed the extra spice!
